According to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA), between 2010 – 2014, fire departments responded to an estimated 15,970 home fires involving clothes dryers or washing machines each year. These fires resulted in annual losses estimated at 13 deaths, 440 injuries, and $238 million in property damage. And, according to the City of Colorado Springs, FAILURE TO CLEAN is the #1 reason that a clothes dryer catches on fire. What this means is the personal and financial loss associated with household dryers is largely unavoidable with the proper attention. In addition to cleaning lint filters regularly and replacing accordion-style ducts with metal ducts, annual inspection and cleaning of your dryer vent is a prudent step in making sure your dryer isn’t creating a fire hazard in your home. Even when you keep your lint filter clean, there can be large amounts of debris trapped inside the duct that you can’t see. There are three telltale signs this might be the case for your dryer vent in Colorado Springs:
Do your clothes take longer than usual to dry?
Is the top of your dryer hot to the touch?
Does the vent hood flap not open properly?
If any of these situations is true for you, your dryer vent may be clogged and if it’s clogged, it may be creating a fire hazard.
